Guns N' Roses Set Release Date - Finally!
Reported By: Amy Wagner |
American Guns N' Roses fans can get ready to knock back a free can of Dr. Pepper because the hard rock icons are finally unleashing Chinese Democracy on the masses.
Their long-gestating, near mythical album will hit shelves in the U.S. on Sunday, November 23rd, bucking the trend of a usual Tuesday release date. As heavily rumored, the disc, the band's first studio album since 1991s Use Your Illusion, will be available exclusively at Best Buy stores. |

Short & Sweet NYC Sat & Sun Oct 11th & 12th
Reported By: DaVe Lipp |
Saturday October 11
Location: East Village, NYC Band: 10 for the 10th: The Budos Band Get Tickets Here Show time: 11:59 PM Venue: Joe's Pub Food: Oyama Drink: Grassroots Tavern Miscellaneous: Mudd Cafe
Part of 10 for the 10th, meaning 10 FREE shows as part of Joe’s Pub 10th Anniversary, several music luminaries will be taking part including The Budos Band, one of the best afrobeat and old school soul bands around. Also on the bill is Jill Sobule with John Wesley Harding, Roy Nathanson and friends with Debbie Harry and more. To get tickets, you must register HERE. With sushi that’s 50 percent off all the time, you might think, “Something’s wrong with that?” but the fish is good and the rolls are inventive, making this one of the best low-priced sushi joints in the city. Though St. Marks all of a sudden lost its charm, Grassroots Tavern hasn’t. This large dive bar has cheap drinks, darts in the back, and old men behind the bar, things a good dive bar should have. Excellent coffee served in a big mug and a healthy menu of food coupled with a year round enclosed outdoor backyard patio make this place a great little coffee shop in the area.
Saturday October 11
Location: Tribeca, NYC Bands: The Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise Tour Show time: 8:30 PM Venue: Knitting Factory Food: Pakistan Tea House Drink: Mocca Lounge Miscellaneous: Chinatown Ice Cream Factory
A collective of musicians, the Elephant 6 has a roster of indie bands like Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, and Of Montreal. Tonight, several musicians from these bands and more including Julian Koster, William Cullen Hart, Scott Spillane, Laura Carter, Eric Harris, Nesey Gallons perform as a traveling variety show performing music by The Music Tapes, Circulatory System, Gerbils, Elf Power, Olivia Tremor Control, Nana Grizol, and more. Nearby, Pakistan Tea House is a buffet style Indian restaurant where you can choose between chicken, meat, fish and vegetables. It’s affordable and very good. For drinks, check out Mocca Lounge. With a funky interior and a menu of Italian inspired fare, it’s also a bar with a large list of coffees with or without alcohol, beers, and frozen shots. Smack dab in the heart of Chinatown, the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory makes gourmet ice cream flavors like Black Sesame, Ginger, Durian, and more exotic flavors like Taro and Wasabi. Don’t worry, they have the go-tos like Vanilla, fruits, and chocolate flavors too.
Sunday October 12
Location: Chelsea, NYC Band: Madonna > Get Tickets Here Show time: 8 PM Venue: Madison Square Garden Food: Pastis Drink: Red Rock West Saloon Miscellaneous: Ninth Street Espresso
She’s been around for what seems like forever and she doesn’t seem to stop re-inventing herself either. The “material girl” Madonna stops by Madison Square Garden to let the world know that she can still put on a great show. If French cuisine is what you’re after, Pastis a French bistro run by Keith McNally offers some of the best classic French food and bistro fare in the city. Usually crowded, it’s not known for its intimacy. Also not known for being quiet, Red Rock West Saloon is a biker and blue collar bar where you can throw back a beer and listen to some Southern rock. What’s a night in NYC without a great cup of coffee in a low-key café? Ninth Street Espresso offers that kind of setting on top of a well-chosen and executed selection of coffees.

Short & Sweet NYC Friday Oct 10th
Reported By: DaVe Lipp |
Friday October 10
Location: Midtown West, NYC Band: Of Montreal Get Tickets Here Show time: 8 PM Venue: Roseland Ballroom Food Go!Go! Curry! Drink Stitch Miscellaneous Leisure Time Bowl
Take indie pop and add some performance art along with songs that get crowds pumped and that is just the tip of the iceberg called Of Montreal. Live they are a vaudevillian act with great melodies and sing along choruses. The owner of Go!Go! Curry! is openly obsessed with Yankee player Hideki Matsui and his Jersey (55). The menu’s theme is baseball and katsu (a fried meat, chicken or shrimp cutlet), served in a curry sauce is the specialty here. Portion sizes are Walk (small), Single (Med.), Double (L), and Triple (XL) and are inexpensive. The mascot, a gorilla for some reason, is plastered everywhere, making this place even quirkier. In the heart of the garment district, Stitch, a cozy after-work bar/lounge, stocks a cocktail menu with a design theme. If you’ve still got energy and are in the mood to bowl, check out Leisure Time Bowl. Located in the Port Authority, this place is stylish and fun.
Friday October 10
Location: East Village Band: MSTRKRFT Show time: 9 PM Venue: Webster Hall Food Minca Drink Ace Bar Miscellaneous Le Gamin Café
One half of MSTRKRFT, Jesse Keeler blew up as part of Death From Above 1979, making inventive dance music with bass and drums. With MSTRKRFT, along with partner Al-P, they continue exploring dance in unorthodox ways, this time behind the turntables. Close by is the ramen noodle bar called Minca. After recently trying this place, I’d highly recommend it. The ramen noodles are made fresh and way better than those you’d buy and boil. What makes the soups here great is the broth. Take the Minca Ramen, a mild broth with pork, chicken and dried seafood ($8.50), it has impeccable flavor that hits the spot. Plus it’s way less expensive than other ramen specialty restaurants and just as good. Right across the street from Minca is the Ace Bar. Sort of divey, it’s also where you’ll find people playing skeeball and shooting pool, while drinking some decent beers on tap. For dessert and coffee, Le Gamin Café is the place for crepes. |

Short & Sweet NYC Sat & Sun Oct 14th & 15th
Reported By: DaVe Lipp |
Saturday October 4
Location: Chelsea, NYC Band: Fleet Foxes Get Tickets Here Show time: 8 PM Venue: Manhattan Center's Grand Ballroom Food: Planet Thailand 212 Drink: Star Lounge Miscellaneous: Burlington Coat Factory
One of the most interesting and highly melodic bands I’ve heard lately, the Fleet Foxes take great harmonies and pop and fuse them together with some old school jamming making their self-titled album diverse and playable over and over again. Before the show, hit Planet Thailand 212 for dinner. Williamsburg’s favorite Thai and sushi restaurant has extended into Manhattan and looks just as impressive as it’s sister. After the show, The Star Lounge, located under the forever-hip Chelsea Hotel has three rooms including a main room that’s red, white, and dimly lit providing a sexy atmosphere. Right next door to the B&N, there’s a Burlington Coat Factory and though it's not glamorous, unlike the department stores across the street, the clothing is not as picked over.
Saturday October 4
Location: Midtown West, NYC Band: Hot Chip Get Tickets Here Show time: 8 PM Venue: Terminal 5 Food: Sullivan Street Bakery Drink: Rudy’s Bar & Grill Miscellaneous: The Shops at Columbus Circle
Mixing real instruments with electronics and a touch of hip-hop, Hot Chip are one of the most inventive and fun bands around and live, they sound as good as they do on record. Arguably one of the top bread makers on the east coast, and good to get gourmet pizza’s and sandwiches, Sullivan Street Bakery makes exquisite food using ingredients you’d see on the Food Network! More bar than grill, Rudy’s is like going back to college, minus the books. The beer is cheap and by “grill,” they mean free popcorn and hot dogs. If you have trouble finding the bar, just look for the 6 foot tall fiberglass pig standing outside! To get out of the cold and see what an upper-class mall is like, stop by The Shops at Columbus Circle. Expensive restaurants like MASA and shops like Williams Sonoma are fun to browse through to see how the other half lives.
Sunday October 5
Location: Upper West Side, NYC Film: Views From the Avant-Garde Show time: See venue site for details Venue: Walter Reade Theater Food: Rain Drink: Prohibition Miscellaneous: American Museum of Natural History
Views From the Avant-Garde is a festival of avant-garde films now in its 12th year that showcases new films by masters of the genre along with new filmmakers works. In the mood for pan-Asian food? Rain is a great bet, with it’s rather large Japanese themed wood paneled space, it has devised dishes like the Jungle Curry Wild Boar with kaffir lime, Thai eggplant, and Shanghai bok choy ($24). Prohibition harkens back to that 20s era full of illegal activity. Fortunately, the bar has an excellent drink menu including 12 different martinis. With pool tables in the back and exposed brick walls covered with paintings of people imbibing drinks, the theme may be prohibition but everyone is having too good a time to notice. If you have a little time to spare, go to the American Museum of Natural History and check out the exhibits “Sea Monsters,” “Cosmic Collisions,” and “Beyond UFOs.” |

Short & Sweet NYC Friday 13th
Reported By: DaVe Lipp |
Friday October 3
Location: Park Slope, Brooklyn Bands: Akoya Afrobeat Orchestra Show time: 9 PM Venue: Southpaw Food: Chiles & Chocolate Oaxacan Kitchen Drink Drink: The Gate Miscellaneous: Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co.
With heavy influence from African music legend Fela Kuti, this afrobeat-loving group seamlessly continues his legacy in making African funk. Having members who have worked with members of Fela’s original band, making this group nothing short of amazing. Speaking of interesting, ever have Oaxacan food? Chiles & Chocolate serves up some fantastic, not exactly Mexican food. Try the smoky flavored Mole Negro, one of the best mole sauces I’ve had in NYC. Before leaving, you must try one of the hot chocolates like the Chiles Y Chocolate. A hint of chipotle without too much heat is a nice kick-start for the night. The Gate is a great Park Slope bar with excellent beers on tap and an outdoor courtyard to chill. If time permits, you must, and I mean MUST go to the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co., a non-profit organization that helps kids with their writing, that’s fronted by a store selling super powers.
Friday October 3
Location: Midtown West, NYC Bands: Jerry Lee Lewis Get Tickets Here Show time: 8 PM Venue: B.B. King Blues Club & Grill Food: Junior’s Restaurant Drink: The View Miscellaneous: Madame Tussaud’s
Who says legends get old? Take a look at Jerry Lee Lewis who’s still going strong. A Rock and Roll legend with more than 50 years in music, he’s still belting out hits like “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” on top of consistently recording albums since 1957. While the original Junior’s in Brooklyn is best, this midtown location offers a nearly identical menu of deli sandwiches, diner entrees, and of course soul food fixin’s, on top of some of the best cheesecake in NYC, which is saying a lot! For drinks check out The View. Not the TV show, but the bar high atop the Marriot Marquis. Plus it revolves. If you’re looking for something to do, go to Madame Tussauds wax museum. Yes, it’s a cheesy tourist attraction, but where else are you going to get a picture with Nicholas Cage or Samuel L. Jackson? |

Echo & The Bunnymen- Ocean Rain - NYC Set List
Reported By: Kevchino |
The band came out and hammered out some hits opening with "Lips Like Sugar" and ended with "The Cutter." Ian McCulloch chatted a lot between songs. I could barely make anything out except he asked if the smoking ban was lifted. I sounded like he came off the set of Snatch.

BAM TAKEOVER Pictures 2008
Reported By: Kevchino |
Saturday night was probably one of the most interactive events I’ve been to in a while as the second annual Takeover took place at BAM, literally taking over the 4 floors of this performing arts space for this almost all-night party going from 9 PM to 4 AM. With bands chosen by Sufjan Stevens, music was presented by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus featuring Nico Muhly, St. Vincent, Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens, and The Budos Band. On the second floor King Britt and Vikter Duplaix were spinning and if being there for the music wasn’t your main intention they also had movies playing all night with themes like “Bring Back the Draught!” (obviously beer related) featuring Beerfest, Strange Brew, The Saddest Music in the World, and The Fatal Glass of Beer Another theme was “Up All Night in 1985” featuring The Last Dragon and Perfect, Fright Night. The final theme was “The Reel World: Brooklyn” featuring Saturday Night Fever, She's Gotta Have It, and The Warriors Finally there was Lars von Trier's The Kingdom: Part I. Plus there was a rec room where you could play Guitar Hero and Wii games and register to vote. Music highlights included seeing Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens get the crowd off their feet and clapping to her gospel songs with her amazing band. St. Vincent played several new songs and the one’s off her album Marry Me were hardly recognizable as she had a full live band playing highly orchestrated versions of those songs, which gave them new life. Highlight of the night was Sufjan Stevens coming out during her set to perform one of Phil Collins biggest hits “In the Air Tonight” as the crowd erupted after the big drum break. But it was The Budos Band that turned this seated venue into a dance party on fire as the audience were moved to shake their tail feathers. This was a very smart event that everyone watching had little time to get bored with, as there were so many options.

Reported By: DaVe Lipp |
Saturday September 27
Location: Fort Greene, Brooklyn Bands: Takeover with St. Vincent + The Budos Band + Naomi Shelton + Brooklyn Youth Chorus Show time: 9 PM Venue: BAM Howard Gilman Opera House Food: Junior’s Drink: O’Connor’s Miscellaneous: Thomas Beisl
Sufjan Stevens hosts this insanely awesome nearly all-night multimedia party (ending at 4 AM) at BAM that will feature diverse musical acts including indie-queen St. Vincent, Brooklyn funk acts The Budos Band and Naomi Shelton, and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. Let’s not forget that there will also be DJs, movies and videogames. Known more for its cheesecake than anything else on its menu, Junior’s also offers fantastic diner and deli style eats from steak burgers to deli sandwiches. If you can make it through dinner, the cheesecake will be worth the wait! One of Brooklyn’s most interesting dive bars, O’Connor’s offers cheap drinks in a place where Park Slope hipsters meet old-time drinkers, making for one of the oddest pairings that works. An excellent place to get schnitzel and goulash and other Austrian delights, Thomas Beisl is right across the street from BAM.
Saturday September 27
Location: Tribeca, NYC Bands: The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players + Pleaseeasaur + Anamanaguchi Show time: 9 PM Venue: Knitting Factory Tap Bar Food: Ear Inn Drink: Village Lantern Miscellaneous: Jacques Torres
Writing funny satirical songs is an art and The Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players, are not just great at it, but use slides found at estate sales to tell the story. Pretty funny. Joining them are campy comedic musical group Pleaseeasaur and the Nintendo-beat loving group Anamanaguchi. One of my favorite places for food, Ear Inn is a 200-year-old bar with a small menu featuring burgers, sandwiches, and a chalkboard with specials including Jerk Chicken that’s under $10. With $3 pints Monday thru Friday 12pm to 7pm along with comedy and music performances, the Village Lantern is a great bar to chill at after work, especially now that it’s finally getting warm outside. Watch some of the best chocolate in the world made right in front of your eyes or browse through the store and sample for yourself the fruits of this master chocolatier’s labor.
Sunday September 28
Location: Chelsea, NYC Band: Vieux Farka Toure Show time: 8 PM Venue: Highline Ballroom Food: Il Bastardo Drink: Brite Bar Miscellaneous: Café Grumpy
While Vieux Farka Toure’s name might sound familiar (his dad is legendary African musician Ali Farka Touré), he has a style all his own. Catch him at the Highline as he effortlessly blends African and blues music brilliantly. Not just a great name for a restaurant, Il Bastardo offers excellent Italian food, seafood, and steak in a large and beautifully designed space. With an interesting menu of cosmos and cocktails like the Fother Mucker, made with Zygo, a locally distilled energy vodka, Brite Bar is a gorgeously designed bar that looks like a lounge but is way more fun. One of my favorite coffee houses due to the fact that they are doing a great job of reinventing the wheel when it comes to making coffee, is Café Grumpy. Here, every cup is freshly pressed and the latte’s are thick and rich tasting. |

Friday September 26
Location: East Village, NYC Bands: Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip + B. Dolan Show time: 7:30 PM Venue: Mercury Lounge Food: Oyama Drink: Grassroots Tavern Miscellaneous: Mudd Cafe
Besides their name bringing giggles to my face for no good reason everytime I say Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip, this electro-hip hop group is one of the most interesting artists to come out of England in a long while. Joining them is B. Dolan, a performance artist, activist and emcee. For old-school hip hop heads and lovers of lyrical verse, getting the chance to see legends like Black Moon and Smiff N Wessun on stage together performing their classic albums Enta da Stage and Da Shinin with a live band. For eats, the Pakistani Tea house is a great little discreet Indian restaurant serving five to six different types of Indian food that is way cheaper than this show. For a drink, try Walker’s. This local hang serves up inexpensive drinks and makes a great burger. Being in the financial district, there’s not a lot going on in Tribeca, but thank god for J&R. With music, electronics, and computer stores all in one area, you chances of getting bored are slim. |

The Menahan Street Band show and new LP
Reported By: Kevchino |
The Menahan Street Band is a collaboration of musicians from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (Dave Guy, Homer Steinweiss, Fernando Velez, Bosco Mann), El Michels Affair (Leon Michels, Toby Pazner), Antibalas (Nick Movshon, Aaron Johnson) and the Budos Band (Mike Deller, Daniel Foder), brought together by musician/producer Thomas Brenneck (Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Budos Band, Amy Winehouse) to record hits in the bedroom of his Menahan St. apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. With influences reaching beyond the funk/soul/afrobeat architecture of their other projects into the more ethereal realms of Curtis Mayfield and Mulatu Astatke, the Menahan Street Band creates a unique new instrumental soul sound that is as raw as it is lush.
Their debut album, Make the Road by Walking will be released on Dunham Records, Brenneck’s new imprint of Daptone Records, a joint venture devoted to bringing the Menahan Street sound from Brenneck’s bedroom out into the world. The album is marked by eerily quirky arrangements, featuring vibes, horns, piano, organ, percussion and even a strange bling sound that Brenneck creates by tuning and plucking the strings of his guitar on the wrong side of the bridge. However, it is not the textures themselves that make the new sound of Menahan Street so exciting, but rather the way the sounds are incorporated into the heavy rhythms and bold melodies of the compositions.
Download two of their instrumental jams: Make the Road by Walking.Mp3
and also stream "Tired Of Fighting" below which was released on a 7-inch along with the song "Telephone Song" featuring Charles Bradley.
Check them out Live Friday, October 17 at Southpaw, Brooklyn, NY |

Beach House Tour & New Single
Reported By: Kevchino |
Beach House release their very fisrt seven inch single. Carpark and Beach House present a limited edition single featuring the new song "Used To Be" from the Baltimore duo. Recorded over the summer of 2008 after many exhaustive months of touring, "Used To Be" contemplates the spiritual and physical effects of life on the everchanging road, love and getting older . The b-side is a four-track demo version of "Apple Orchard" (from the Beach House S/T album) recorded three years to the month before the new song. It's one of the first things Alex and Victoria recorded together as Beach House. With this tiny single, one can hear a small history of the band, where they came from, and where they're going.

Now and Then: Metallica
Reported By: Nick Greto |
Metallica hasn’t been Metallica for years. Yes, they have technically kept their name, but the sounds that they had created can only be compared to those of a band half of what they once were. Sort of like this new Guns ‘n Roses cover band that Axl has put together. But, I digress. Metallica, is back … kind of. They aren’t as strong as they were during …And Justice for All. And they aren’t as weak as they were during Load, Reload, St. Anger and anything else that has been released since the black album.
The band’s new album, titled Death Magnetic, is available now.
