DJ Shadow is the alias used by Josh Davis, 26, from Davis, California, located near Sacramento. He records under no other alias's. Since he was a child. Josh loves to tell the story of how he was 10 years old and he first heard Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" on his clock-radio. "In 1984, at the age of 12, Josh graduated to a Sears all-in-one unit, the kind that featured a turntable, radio and double cassette deck - only his was special. 'There was a glitch in the machine so that you could hold the select knob in between the phono and tape and actually hear both,' recalls Davis. 'So I could record from one tape to another, lay a beat on the tape, record that beat onto the other tape and scratch over it at the same time on my turntable. That's how I started mixing.'" Deeply into hip-hop from early on, the resident of Davis, California recalls that the very first record that he ever 'paid my own money for' was the Sugarhill Gang's Street Beats, a best-of double vinyl set." He has collaborated with DJ Krush,Solesides crew; ie Blackalicious, Lyrics Born, Lateef. Most recently he has worked with James Lavelle on UNKLE, Automator, Cut Chemist.
