1978 – Cheap Trick’s ‘Heaven Tonight’ comes out
1993 – Redd Kross deliver ‘Phaseshifter’

Unrelated events? Possibly. However, to Australian three piece Neon these two albums are forever linked. Neon write songs as though they’re filtering the 2 albums above through their own patented all-class rock filter. If vocal melodies, harmonies and crunchy rock guitars are your bag, you could do worse than pay some close attention to the development of this band. Neon are power poppers to the core, reminiscent of Cheap Trick, The Knack and even bits of Nirvana.

The Beginning
Neon's early adventures have been on the rollercoaster end of the scale. Signed to Oz management label Winterman & Goldstein (Jet, The Vines), their initial demos pricked the ears of Steve MacDonald of aforementioned Redd Kross fame at around the same time as they landed on the London desk of Transcopic Records boss Graham Coxon (Blur). MacDonald swiftly flew over to L.A so he could produce their album. "It was totally surreal, his call came at 3am and initially we thought it was a joke" says Jamie Gurney (drums/vocals). “We couldn’t believe it” says Josh Bitmead (vocals/guitar) “Dale Crover from The Melvins came down and played a drum outro on one of the tracks, and when we wanted a different guitar sound Steve simply called up Pat Smear (Meat Puppets, Nirvana) and we borrowed some of his gear”.
