WHERE FROM
Seattle, Washington

WHERE NOW:
Celebrating the release of her first LP in Detroit.
Careful listeners will recognize Rosie’s lilting vocals from her appearance on Damien Jurado’s Ghost of David (that’s her singing on “Parking Lot”) and on last year’s Badlands: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska (she and Damien duet on “Wages of Sin,” lending a rare validity to the term “bonus track”). Now, she’s showcasing her own songs, and in retrospect, picking the newcomer for the daunting task of a classic Springsteen ballad was no mistake. Songs like “October,” “Charlotte” and the traditional-based “Have You Seen My Love?” fit right inside the mood she so effortlessly conveyed on “Wages of Sin.”

Produced by Martin Feveyear (Mark Lanegan, The Briefs, Octant), When We Were Small is a calm shot to the heart, pulling strings up tight like memories. Ten songs, tastefully arranged (and peppered with actual samples from Rosie’s childhood) with the spotlight now on Rosie’s striking voice, which rings out wonderfully in the spirit of Joni Mitchell. Certainly the spotlight will return to Sheila again, but for now, it’s shining on soft sounds, faded dresses, roller skates and cheery holidays, all in the shadows of grown up things like the boys that got away.
