Young People

Young People were formed in Los Angeles in 2001 by Katie, Jeff and Jarrett. In some ways though, the band was born in 3 cities. Berlin is where Katie and Jeff started writing songs together (meant to be ‘drinking songs’), San Francisco is where they collaborated on dance scores (Katie is a member of the Leg and Pants Dans Theeatre and recently produced Starter Set, a DVD of new dance and music for the camera for Kill Rock Stars) and Los Angeles is where they met Jarrett and it all came together.
They released their first album, self-titled, in 2002 on the 5RC label (part of Kill Rock Stars). That was followed by War Prayers (Dimmak) in 2003 and a split 7”, Where The Streets Have No Name (Narnack) last year.
Young People signed to Too Pure on the heels of making Five Sunsets in Four Days. The EP was recorded while the band were on tour with the Liars. They had a day off and went into The Stagg Street Studios in Los Angeles to record, with Rod Cervera producing. While Katie is the singer on each song the band members don’t stick to a single instrument but rather share the drumming, guitar and bass duties. This is the case both in the studio and live.
Today the band is pared down to Katie and Jarrett (though live they will add 2 more musicians) – Katie now lives in NYC while Jarrett remains in Los Angeles.
