How did you guys get started? Patrick: We started playing in high school cuz' we lived around the block from each other and dan would usually come down to my dad's house with his guitar and amp and we would make tapes on my four track. this was roughly around 1997-2000 and we were doing pretty much the same thing. then in august of 2001 dan came over to my house and we decided to record some stuff again so that one get together turned into our demo that got us on Alive Records.
Why just two people? ...No love for bass? Patrick: We never could find a bass player and that is why it has always just been the two of us. Bass players are hard to find especially ones that can really play. We tried it out once but it didn't work. we have just gotten really accustom to no bass.
How does the new album "Thickfreakness" differ from the "Big Come Up?" Patrick: The new album "THickfreakness" is just a lot better in every sense .... better songs, better sounds, better performances. After playing out 2-3 times a week at least for the past 8 months we have gotten better, but we still keep it raw as shit. the first album "Big Come Up" was more of a learning experience ya know, but we are still really proud of it.
Name your biggest influences (not on Fat possum). Patrick: Ralph Carney Dan: Son House, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, James Carr, Early Stanley Brothers, Hound Dog Taylor, The Sonics, Fred McDowell - even music i hate inspires me to try to make good music.
What made you choose to cover "She Said, She Said" on the debut album? Patrick: We just thought it would be interesting and we had a tape of revolver and I have always loved that song it's just really fucked up.
What's up with the whole Mr. Science narrator thing? Patrick: My brother mike got me some records to take samples from and Dan and I really liked that one (Listen to it backwards!)
Is T-Model as crazy as he sounds on his albums? Dan: Not crazy but a product of his environment - it's fucked up in Mississippi for a black man and especially fucked up when your dad beat you so bad that you lost a testicle. through all of that, T-Model is the sweetest old man you could ever want to meet though he'd steal your girlfriend in a heartbeat if you weren't looking. as a human, he's very inspiring for sure.
Any musicians you'd like to work with? Patrick: Devandra Banhart
Any big tour plans coming up? ...like say places outside the MidWest? Patrick: We will be out with Sleater-kinney for most of February we're gonna hit the West Coast and the East Coast, then in march / april we will be out West again on our own and then the East Coast and Mid-West. We are also playing SXSW (South by South West) and we hit Europe in april.
What's next for "The Black Keys" Patrick: More Records - Shows - a Cartoon - Action Figures - Lunch Boxes, you know that shit! |
