Tell us about the Grandaddy DVD that’s in the works. Lots of different types of footage spanning many years. Probably a lot of funny shit. Some homemade videos and most of our bigger budget videos, and general storytelling
Is “The Lytle” done mixing yet? Is it still titleted the Blahblahpoopoo album? I hope so, as it is a great name for an album. On September 28, I am almost done mixing. “Just Like the Fambly Cat” is the name of the album.
What can we expect from Grandaddy’s upcoming EP (due out September 27th) “Excerpts from the Diary of Todd Zilla”? Seven Songs. Yellow artwork. Songs about being frustrated, presented in a humorous context. Also some sad stuff.
You’ve described your hometown of Modesto as, among other things, “Frighteningly mediocre”, and seemed less than shocked that Modesto was put on the map by a murderer. Please throw down some more hater style comments for us. Terrible airquality, lots of meth use. Rampant obesity, crappy restaurants, explosions, earthquakes, and space shuttle crashes.
At least you’re not from Bakersfield. Do people from Modesto make fun of people from Bakersfield? Yeah, People from Modesto think people from Bakersfield are high class snobs.
So, your songs are like your kids; you love them all the same. But really, which is your favorite? Or at least narrow it down to a few. I tend to favor the ones that don’t quite resemble anything I can put my finger on. Like the ones that have become an overall feeling, more than a song. “So you’ll aim toward the sky” off Sophtware Slump comes to mind. Also “Chartsengrafs”
What are some of your favorite cover songs to play live? “Bicycle Race” by Queen and “Dreamin my Dreams” by Waylon Jennings
What bands made an impression on you when you were an impressionable teen? The Cars, Bad Brains, E.L.O., Flock of Seagulls, Neil Young
What music do you shamefully listen to on your downtime? Greenday and Enya
Does your love of skateboarding still play a part in your music, or do I need to get out of the way back machine? I still skate some some skateparks a few times a week. I seek out a flowing weightless thing in both music and in skateboarding.
If you were a distilled liquor, what distilled liquor would you be? Some magic blend of Whiskey, scrambled eggs, ketchup and diet coke. I’d call it “Tuesday morning comin’ down” You’ve signed with a major label (V2) and released more than one critically acclaimed album with, most likely, another on the way. Which leads one to wonder: What’s your favorite color? Light blue with mudd splatter
What are some of your favorite out-of-the-way places to dine when on tour? I like Wendy’s. Cracker Barrel is great. It’s a “diner” chain. They put butter in your coffee and you don’t even have to ask for it.
You guys have been around since 1992; what do you make of these punk kids today? Breaking things, stealing, getting wasted, hitchhiking and fighting is punk. Most punks these days are far from punk.
Finish this equation: Emo is to Ska as Grandaddy is to ___________. Rosanne Barr
After everyone buys your new EP, DVD and upcoming album, what other bands should they emotionally (and financially) invest in? Every side project that splinters out from what used to be Grandaddy. |
