How did your music career come about? Why, When, Were? When I was 10, I was waiting for somebody from my family in a french airport when I spotted some guys dressed like girls. I put my mothers boots when I when back home and thought it was pretty cool. I knew years later that it was the New York Dolls on their parisian trip.
Tell us a day in the life as Kid Loco? Wake up at 7.30 A.M. Lots of spliffs and coffee while reading a book Have more spliffs and coffee in bed with my wife. In the studio from 11 A.M. until 6.00 P.M. Back home to cook the dinner ANd after this it depends...
On your web site there is an animated studio movie. Is that an accurate picture of your studio? My old studio (The Lafayette Velvet Basement) looked quite the same but I had to move and I'll be like a Gypsie for a while I guess going from a place to another. All the gear, posters etc are things I use or which are around me when I'm doing music.
You have done music under various names including Kid Bravo, and Kid Loco? Do these names signify different parts of your music career? Kid Bravo is the name I use when I write songs, Kid Loco is my musician name. My father thinks I'm a cosmonaut so I had to change my name.
What's next in the album cue to follow up to "Kill Your Darlings?" I'm doing the music for a cartoon called "Delta State" at the moment, so maybe my next LP will be an O.S.T. But anyway it will be different from "Kill Your Darlings", I've never been able to do the same thing twice, so I guess I'm to old to start now.
In the past you have contributed some amazing mixes of Pulp, High Llamas, The Pastels, Cornelius, Mogwai, Saint-Etienne, Lisa Germano and Takako Minekawa. Have you been producing or remixing any artists lately? I've made something like 100 remixes in these last 6 years but now I'm more into producing a whole record than just to work on a remix which will end on the B-side of a 12 inch. I've just produced the last Tanger's record (A french band) and I'm working on the new Quinn's one (The band of Louise Quinn who sings on "Kill Your Darlings")
What could one expect of a Kid Loco live performance? I've been touring Europe last year and we were 6 on stage. I was singing and playing guitars + Tim Keegan (vocals and guitar), Jake Kyle (Basse), DJ Seep (Turntables and Fx), Erik Jansson (Keyboards), Greg (Drums). It was not really electronic beats, maybe more something like psychedelic beats.
Are there plans for any DJ sets or Live shows in the US? Not really I got this thing going on with Georgie Bush Jr for a long time now and nothing has been settled yet.
Tell us about Royal Belleville Music? Royal Belleville Music is dead. Long live Royal Belleville !
Your music has very sexual tones and packaging? How do you feel these are captured in your music? Music has to be sexual otherwise it's boring. When I see a live band I want to see the most beautiful people on the world playing on a stage not bold guys turning knobs dressed in Nike shirts with day-glo sunglasses. I like to move when i listen to music but as I don't dance, I don't do sports, I don't crash my head into a wall so it must be something sexual.
Who is the woman moaning on "She Woolf Daydreaming" off "A Grand Love Story"? She asked me not to tell you her name....
Do you have personal favorite CD living in your music box for 2003? Still playing Ms JADE "Girl Interrupted".
Any Closing Comments? My wife just told me yesterday to get rid off my shirt because it looks like an old bag, so don't ask me any clothing advice.
Take care Jean Yves (Kid Loco) |
