Rob Pope, bassist in the indie rock pop group Koufax, phoned into Jocelyn Vena from a bar in Ohio. This is what he had to say about the band, their music, and Ben Franklin. Mind you, he may have been drinking. But, Pope is a professional man so it never got too out of hand. We promise.
What’s it like having a rotating line up?
One upsetting thing is you can’t develop a strong chemistry. You play with people for years and you play songs so much better. So the fact that we’re playing songs we’ve played thousands of times with guys who haven’t, makes it exciting.

How does that work? Where do you find members?
There’s a big pool of people we know. From there we pick people. If you treat people respectively then people will want to be in the band. We’re starting to get offers easier since the band makes money to pay people.

(Somehow Ben Franklin came up)
Speaking of Ben Franklin, if you could invent anything, what would it be?
If I could turn back time, the Federal Reserve because it’s the most genius scam. You create money from nothing and then you loan and collect interest. This is why the world is f***ed up.
Politics is pretty important right now, even if you’re not liberal or conservative. The middle class is voiceless.

Did you always want to be in a band and play music?
My mother used to say when I was a baby I would shake perfectly in tune with the music. Being in a band quickly became a vehicle to travel and I’ve kept that the number one thing. The last three years the band has got to a point where we can pay bills.

What’d you do before this?
I finished University where I studied Media Studies. And I have tried not to be in a band in the last couple of years. You don’t want to become a cliché. I’ve always kept this as a means of travel and we’ve made friends around the world. Rather we have 20,000 friends than 20,000 fans.

What’s the best part about being a musician?
The one bad thing when you do what I do is people ask what you do and you say I’ve been here and here and here. You just reference these things like it’s an average yesterday and it’s not. And when that happens people think you’re a f***ing jerk. I tend to not tell people what I do because people are like, “What?”
