Moving across the world, shuffling bandmates, and spending a few years under the radar would be enough to derail most bands. Proving the age-old adage, 2009 sees Sacha Lucashenko and Martin B. Sleeman of the Morning After Girls building on the band’s early promise and returning with a new album and lineup. The ever-gracious Sleeman recently discussed the band’s plans with Kevin Serra.
So I hear the band has relocated from Melbourne, Australia to the New York area. What prompted the move to the US?

The same thing that prompts us to do everything we've ever done—our heart, our soul, our spirit, and the unification of this with our mind.

Did all the existing members make the move, or did you have any lineup changes?

No, myself and Sacha relocated to New York in early 2008. Since then we've made the very satisfying inclusions of EJ Hagen (bass), Alex White (multi-instrumental), and Anthony Johnson (drums/percussion).

When will the follow-up LP to the Shadows Evolve album be out?

At this stage, we are expecting the album, Alone, to be out around March or April. But I do stress at this stage.

Where was the new LP recorded?
It was recorded in various regions of Melbourne, Australia and London, England.

How was it working with producer Alan Moulder (NIN, Depeche Mode, Blonde Redhead, My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins)?

It was an absolute pleasure. We felt very, very comfortable working with him. There was so much mutual respect, and whenever there is, you are always going to have an easy, satisfying, and very successful relationship.

Are you planning some shows or a tour in the US?

We certainly are. We have two shows coming up very shortly, firstly, at New York's Mercury Lounge (Jan 27th) and then at LA's Viper Room (Jan 29th). Following this, we would like to be doing a full tour of the USA in March/April.

What were your favorite LPs from 2008?

I don't really have favorites in life, and besides, I must be honest and say that nothing really appealed to me at all. For a long time now, there has been a serious lack of really important music that gets exposed. I say exposed because I know there has to be great people making great music out there, but it's simply not receiving the exposure that it deserves.

What are some of your favorite bands from Australia?

Three Month Sunset, Gaslight Radio, The Smallgoods.

What food do you most miss from Australia that’s not so easily found in the US?

The Chef's Special, from The Farmer's Arms Hotel. When you're made to feel this good, you know you will always miss it.

Any closing comments, recipes, or other information you might want to share with Kevchino readers?

Follow your heart, follow your mind, and seek the unification of both within yourself. If you always do this, there will always be love within you, and without you.

Join us.

Thank you very much, and peace and love to you all.
Martin.
