By calling themselves The Adored, this four man band featuring two Northern Californians and two east coast transplants, may have easily opened themselves up to rounds of snarky Saturday Night Live-like ridicule. But then again, they may have the last laugh. Their five track EP easily lives up to they hype implied by their name. And, while I’m not quite in a state of full-fledged adoration, I’ve already crossed over into the realm of extreme like. By taking the best of punk and post punk (i.e. British New Wave), The Adored have created an original mix of punch vocals mixed with surprisingly up tempo tunes.
On the EP’s first track, “TV Riot”, the band seems determined to place mass media and popular culture on the endangered species list. The Adored shakes a disapproving finger at a nation “stuck in reruns” when “we should be getting things done”. It may be a strange message for an up and coming band to harp on, but they make their point without preaching, opting instead for pop beats reminiscent of Dire Straits and Thomas Dolby. It’s easy to image the band members sitting around listening to Dolby’s hit “She Blinded Me With Science” and then quickly plugging in to record their own songs like “Sex in Fashion” while the tempo was still fresh in their heads.
The Adored seem perfectly poised to ride the wave of resurging interest in New Wave music (New Order is even back on the scene with a new album) while stirring up a few of their own currents. Look for their full-length LP due on later this year on V2 Records. |
