This collaboration between the French electronic duo Air and Italian
writer Alessandro Baricco grew out of a staged reading with musical
accompaniment. The November 2002 event went so well that the two
parties decided to record the results. 'City Reading' is an interesting
project- but the cd is pretty much only for the diehard fan of Air or Mr.
Baricco.
'City Reading' is made up of three parts 'bird', 'la puttana di
closingtown' and 'caccia all uomo'. The nineteen tracks on the cd
make up these three parts. Not being at all fluent in the Italian language,
I couldn't tell you where one part ended and another began. Alessandro
Baricco is a fine reader of his own work. Air provides a subtle and effective
background to the authors work. The instrumentation is mainly acoustic
guitar and synthesizer. There is very little percussion. All in all-very well
done.
This cd is a well done Italian language book on audio. If that's your bag-
have fun! The uninitiated should probably listen to 'Moon Safari' or the
soundtrack to the Virgin Suicides. Those are probably the best works by
Air -so far. Otherwise 'City Reading (Tre Storie Western)' is only for those
who must have every Air recording.
