8 Alaska Emotions B-Girl | 2003 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   Folk music has known to be sing songy and down right horrible in the eyes of the youth in any generation. At last a folk band has evolved the sound and taken it to a new level. Alaska! has finally taken the soft and light cheery side out of folk music and twisted it into a plethora of involved lyrics and open harmonies. Their new release “emotions” (which from the title would make you think they were “emo” or something) takes the listener to the borders of the Yukon and dives into their emotion with sharp and deliberate lyrics in ‘rust and cyanide’ which tell us “there will be no holocaust, on alaska! there’s no holocaust.” The band is made up of Imaad Wasif vocals and guitar, Russel Pollard vocals, guitar and bass, and Lesley Ishino drums. The greatest part about the album is that you actually have to listen to it to appreciate it. Around my third listening session I began to feel like I was able to get in touch with the music and the idea alaska! is trying to pass on to listeners. Alaska! can be best explained as almost a mix of Pink Floyds slow songs and the brilliance of lyrics like the White Stripes (who I adore). Though they don’t have enough fast songs in my opinion the slower songs are more involving and in fact more rewarding at the end as well. Some great tracks to catch are ‘love (to be your main)’ and ‘lost the gold’ which are two fantastic faster songs on the album that will get you into the CD or possibly convince you to buy it. Alaska! cannot be explained in some three paragraph review with words. Its an experience you will have to take on your own. This is by no means a must have album but its more than enjoyable and you definitely will be in a better mood after you listen to it. It isn’t called “emotions” for no reason, it takes you from love to hate, to happiness to sadness, and then at the end of it you find yourself in alaska!
