6 Alpinestars White Noise Astralwerks | 2003 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   Alpinestars are the synth-rock duo of Richard Woolgar and Gly Thomas. They hail from the city of Manchester in England. This cd sounds a bit like Manchesters greatest hits. The influences of other bands from that city are apparent on 'White noise'. Otherwise,this is a very promising debut cd. 'Snow patrol' starts off the debut with a fine robotic kind of dance number. The vocal have a kind of icy (ha-ha) detached quality that fits the song. 'Nusex city' is very similar and I thought the entire cd would be nice but too similar. After that, the Alpinestars start to slow the tempos and try more than the usual dance/synth/rock stuff. 'Brotherhood' is a very pretty instrumental. 'Smash it up' sounds like a lost Happy Mondays song. It was kind of weird to hear that kind of stuff after the first couple of songs. There were touches of New Order and Joy Division on a few of the songs. Brian Molko of Placebo guest on lead vocals for 'Carbon kid'. The vocals on most of the tracks seem to be shared by both members. They both do a fine job matching each members vocal strengths-depending upon the song. The production is quite good. 'Snow patrol' and 'Carbon kid' each get a remix on 'White noise'. Usually one would think that remixes are used to pad out the cd, but these different mixes change the tempo and the feeling of each song to a significant degree. In other words- it was a good idea to add these remixes. My only annoyance with the Alpinestars is that they do a bad radio commercial for Vanilla Coke. The things you have do these days to sell cds.
