7 Antibalas Security Anti | 2007 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   One of the leading innovators of afrobeat since its creator Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Brooklyn’s own Antibalas has developed a cult following through fantastic live shows and genuine love for this African funk style. Truer to the afrobeat form than even Femi Kuti (Fela’s son), this big band of revolving musicians have surprisingly switched things up on their newest album Security by collaborating in a sense with indie rock producer John McEntire, who’s worked with the like of Stereolab and Tortoise. Not the perfect pairing right? Actually, you’d be wrong for thinking something like that without listening to it first. For shame! "Beaten Metal" starts with a stack of horns and, you got it, metal objects being beaten. Together it sounds like a match made in heaven over some heavy funk drumming. As several other instruments slowly make their way in, the song quickly erupts into a booty shaking good time. The one great thing I like about Antibalas is that no matter what they play, it will make you move your feet. One thing I like about the production on this album is that their music sounds like it’s moving into another direction while maintaining its afrobeat roots. What would an Antibalas album be without a few songs that run over the 10-minute mark? One that I wouldn’t buy and probably wouldn’t recognize. "Filibuster XXX" and "Sanctuary" both running over the 11 minute mark are some authentic jams that slowly build into a frenzy and culminate into horn heavy explosions of sound and style. The beauty of this album is highlighted by the great musicianship this band has with one another and production kudos go to John McEntire who mixed things up enough on "Security", making Antibalas sound better than ever.
