According to many acolytes, its programmers and performers are one step ahead of every other producer and music fan in the world putting out 12" after 12" of forward thinking beats and ideas. No music writer or listener has ever openly discussed the possibility of a day when this genre will plateau as far as I can tell. Maybe it is due to this whirlwind of hyperbole that my expectations are always raised to the sky's limit whenever I try to listen to a new record by a progenitor of electronic music. I'm constantly expecting to hear my mind blown and to be given something that I would have never thought possible. This could help explain why I was left so high and dry by the new B. Fleischmann record. Essentially there is nothing at all wrong with this double CD set. The music is a pleasant mishmash of beats and clicks and warps and occasional live instrumentation topped with a healthy sprinkling of odd vocal turns by Mr. Fleischmann himself. It is a laid back collection of the sort of abstract electronica that fans of artists such as Dntel or Mouse on Mars would not kick out of bed. Yet, I was still left wanting. I was expecting some sharp turn in some unexpected direction. I was hoping for the thrill that made my brain feel like it was on fire such as when I heard Oval's 94Diskont or even the last Nobukazu Takemura record. All I was given though was a gentle shrug of a CD that sounded too much like everything that has come before it. It made me wonder if the days of the plateau were coming for the electronica world. This record for all its good moments still sounds too much like what has already been done and what people are already doing.
