Beach House closed out a long year of touring by returning to the studio this summer to record a new song. The result is a new tune titled “Used To Be,” a dreamy lullaby in which singer Victoria confesses the ever-changing effects of love, being on the road, and growing older. They released the new song on vinyl along with a B-side of “Apple Orchard (Virgin 4 Track Recording)” off their debut album. The 4-track version starts off with a loud boom, then proceeds into a very warbled recording complete with all the original highlights of soothing slide guitar, tranquil organ, and haunting lyrics of the LP version that got me hooked on this band. The song was recorded three years earlier to the month of “Used To Be.” I’ll continue listening to the LP recording of “Apple Orchard” any day, but this pairing of new and old displays a nice gauge of how the band progressed in such a short time.

Though not the Baltimore duo’s first vinyl experience, this is the band’s first vinyl seven-inch single. The artwork shows a photograph of the front of a typical motel courtyard with a pool, a site that most any touring musician could paint by memory. “Used To Be” shows that Victoria and Alex are on top of their game and provides a nice treat until we get to hear the band’s third album.
