Eleven years later, the lyric “Hello nasty, where ya been?” uttered by one Beastie Boy, in the midst of their fifth album, may come off as a premature starting point for enthusiasm over a re-release . . . and it is. Though it is certainly not a crime to increase the fun value of an album that showed they had no intentions of slowing down, but instead intended to move further on with their special brand of hip hop. Again, the Beastie Boys had managed to make a highly funtastic showcase for their hybrid musical style, which had already begun to take shape with their earlier effort, Check Your Head, even at the expense of Hello Nasty playing like the aforementioned album, where it just goes and goes and then abruptly ends.
In this incarnation of the 1998 hit album, there are a load of extras on disc two with varying enjoyment quality, but one could not accuse the Beastie Boys of leaving anything on the shelf from this period in their career. Some highlights on the bonus disc include Colleone & Webb’s take on “Intergalactic” and Fatboy Slim’s version of “Body Movin’.”
All in all it’s a righteous venture to revisit this time in their career, even if you’re just a passive fan of the group and aren’t interested in the frills of products of this nature. |
