Solid Gold Hits congers up visions of dancers in gold lame’ outfits, Rex Smith and Marilyn McCoo counting down the top 20 songs of the week and bands such as Mental As Anything and Men At Work. I do not think Beastie Boys, Solid Gold Hits. If you do not know what I refer to then maybe this is the CD for you. I do agree that these are hits but turn on any “alternative” or “college” radio station and you can hear these hits. In fact I did a little test in the LA area and while surfing radio stations three of these hits were on different stations at the same time. The fact that pretty much everyone can sing along with each song is a clue as well.

Don’t get me wrong I love the Beastie’s and think they make fabulous records but this is an unnecessary addition to the catalog unless you really have no clue who they are or what their music represents. Maybe it’s a good gift for the season to your little nephew who needs some old school lessons in hip hop.

I look forward to new Beastie music. Bring on some original grooves that I can sink my teeth into.
