8 The Beatles Love Capitol / EMI | 2007 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   We all know how the Beatles felt about mash ups when Danger Mouse mixed the fab four with Jay Z and spat out the “Grey Album”. It was one big legal cry of “Cease and desist you bad rodent!”. But, what if the mash up comes from within their own circle? Well, simply, it’s all “love, love, love”. And so we have Love a mash-up of various Beatles tunes created by the group’s legendary producer George Martin and his son Giles for a show by Cirque du Soleil which is currently running in Las Vegas. While the idea of turning music of the Beatles into a soundtrack for flying trapeze artists and acrobats sent some into frenzy, it isn’t out of left field when you consider the circus-like nature of some of the band’s music - most notably the whole Sgt. Pepper phase. That being said, Beatlemaniacs can sleep easy - there’s no real bastardizing of the tunes here. It is a little jarring to hear the enigmatic “I Am the Walrus” followed by the happy-go-luckniess of “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. It’s like going through a decades worth of personal and musical growth with the band in a matter of a few seconds. Most of the mashing here does work and is worth a listen. The jangly chord that opens the song and film “A Hard Days Night” segues into “Get Back” and it’s almost breathtaking. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” feels sort of thrown into the mix but the song still makes you stop and well weep. Ringo’s “Octopus’ Garden” has a symphonic opening that makes you look past its initial goofiness. Love is a fun album all around, but the the true strength of this release is that it makes you reconsider songs that you’ve heard a million times. While that’s a plus, it also opens up another question. What would a this album sound like if Danger Mouse had been handed the reins? Don’t sue me for the thought!
