Not much is known about the band, The Beautiful New Born Children. But the facts are clear: A. They are gorgeous. B. They were recently born. C. They were signed to Domino from an unsolicited demo. D. They sing of getting into fights, drinking all day, and being (their word) “Beefy.”
And they are, in part, named because all band members are parents. Two have a child together. The Beautiful New Born Children are vocalist/guitarist Michael Beckett, his wife/bassist Kirsten and drummer Per Nyhus. And then there’s guitarist/ladies things designer Lorenz.
The Beautiful New Born Children’s leading man, Michael Beckett is a busy, busy man. In addition to – as the kids call - the BNBC, Beckett is also part of Schneider TM and Super Reverb. He is also Kptmichigan. One wonders how invested in one project, such as The Beautiful New Born Children, Beckett can be when he’s spread himself so thin. Well, it’s only rock and roll and we kind of like it…when we like it.
Beckett does not allow the word “garage” to be uttered in front of him. He prefers the word cellar, as it is more accurate. But The BNBC music is so garage. The Beautiful New Born Children’s album, “Hey People” infuses all the stripped down rock of old (how time flys!) White Stripes with all the attitude, speed and distilled liquor of The Strokes. That’s the good news. So, same coin other side: “Hey People” plays like “Last Nite” and “Fell In Love With A Girl” set on repeat mode. With only a break in between with “I Do Too” - it’s his ‘Chemical imbalance’ you see - “Hey People” is a good time, if not a repetitive one. |
