Beck's seventh release 'Sea Change' is a brilliant, produced album, filled with melancholy soul bending heart broken tracks, recorded all within a two week period. The album would be best suited for fans of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Nick Drake.
Thirty-Two year old Beck's voice gains wisdom and age on this disc, with one foot in the grave and one foot in his poetic words. The album is beautifully packed with 4 different covers. (above)
The opening track 'The Golden Age' starts of with a catchy Glokenspiel melody and rolls into acoustic guitar as Beck sing's 'These days I barely get by. I don't even try.' This track could easily sneak onto Neil Young's 'Harvest Moon.'
'Paper Tigers' starts of with a drum roll into a funky bass line by Justin Medal-Johnson, and crisp electric gutairs, and is interupted by a wickedly beautiful string arrangment conducted by Joey Waronker.
'Lonesome Tears' with it's honest display of pure emotion, with an awkward string melody and tourtured chorus, as Beck sing's 'How could this love, ever-turning. Never turn its eye on me?' in a Pink Floydish fashion.
'Lost Cause' starts with backwards syth soup and snaps swiftly into Beck's clean campy guitar melody as Beck sulks 'Your sorry eyes cut through bone, they make it hard to leave you alone.'
'End of the Day' Beck captures the feeling of heart break, with his lyrics 'It's nothing that I haven't seen before. But it still kills me like it did before.'
'Round the Bend' remenicent of Nick Drake, with it's calm almost inaudible vocals, light gutair and cool strings, leaves you lost in twilight desert.
One of my favorite tracks is the brief 'Already Dead' with it's seductive picked guitar work with beautiful key changes, ask beck cries 'Already Dead to me now, cause it feels like I'm watching something die.'
'Sunday Sun', showcases Beck vocal chords as he belts out his tortured 'There's no other ending, Sunday Sun!' overlayed with a festive arabian melody and powerful drumming and gutair, ending in a bitter discenent rock and roll disaster.
This is the first album on Kevchino.com to receive a ten of 10. So congradulations Beck!
Lucky for Beck who has the cheerful and crazy lads The Flaming Lips backing this album and opening the 2nd tour. Hopefully they will cheer him up as people wander on stage in bunny costumes! I'm going to catch the show at New York City's Beacon Theatre.
And for the more up-beat Beck fan's rumour has it he's already scheduled time to collaborate with Japan's Cornelius on a new studio album! |
