'Beaches And Canyons' is the third release by the Black Dice. These
art-noise weirdos have been likened to Can and Throbbing Gristle in some
quarters. These comparisons seem altogether too generous. This group
from Providence,Rhode Island certainly knows how to play their instruments-
but not a lot really happens on this cd. Every song is long ,noisy and
pointless. I just don't get it.
'Things'll never be the same' starts with a nice keyboard line -followed by
this feedback wash-followed by some yelling. Nearly 10 minutes of pointless
dribble. 'The dream is going down' has some noisy stuff-followed by
someone saying something or another for 11 minutes. The best track
'Endless happiness' starts with a penny whistle intro-descends into more
pointless noise- and ends with 6 minutes of ocean sounds. Skip the song
and just buy an ocean sound effects cd.
It took me a long time to review this cd because every song turned out
to be a musical endurance test. I'm usually not this harsh, but I have my limits.
Now one of my greatest fears is to have this cd- or a Celine Dion cd-on a
tape loop if I go to hell.
