The 4th album from Brooklyn's Black Dice finds the experimental noise rock trio opening up their dark electronica to let in a bit of breezy fun once in awhile. They haven't started courting listeners outside their genre by any means (to say that the group is an "acquired" taste is like saying Britney Spears is "troubled") but those who like to trip down the musical path less traveled will notice the band trying out some new things with a good amount of success. Overall, Load Blown is a collection of song that act like a master class in the often under-appreciated art of sound mixing.
Opening song "Kokomo" finds the band starting out on familiar territory, mixing electronic flutters with an ambient hum. It would be the perfect soundtrack for one of those end of the world movies. The human race has been decimated and all that's left behind are our electronic gizmos that buzz and squeal for attention. "Roll Up" also plays around with ambient fuzz but there's something jazzy and jangly, like the sounds of a carnival, mixed in deep. It's very faint and far away but just the promise of something in the distance, that might or might not grow closer, makes for an intriguing track.
A few of the songs flirt with the more abrasive side of noise rock but they're not as successful because they don't let the band show off how good they are at layering sound upon sound. "Gore" with some deep-throated ree deeps sounds like bullfrogs rockin' out in an outerspace club but the flow is broken by scratchy hisses that don't add anything to the mix. "Scavenger" is full of sharp layers that do not play well with each other - to say the least.
Black Dice do have a secret weapon though that anchors their album and provides the last minute shot of adrenaline that the disc needs. It's a bubbly track called "Toka Toka" full of pop friendly blips and bloops. The songpractically screams to be sampled and you can expect it to get the night started right at dance happy clubs.
