Emerging from San Francisco, California, comes one of 2000's brilliant new bands, The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Borrowing the name from Marlon Brando's 'The Wild One' this three piece outfit, consists of Peter Hanes, vocals, guitar and bass, Robert Turner, vocals, guitar and bass and drummer Nick Jago, and each member is not a day over 24.
Imagine Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Jesus and the Mary Chain, The Verve, and Love and Rockets merged into one playing guitar heavy rock songs and ethereal jams. A brief description of what this threesome is puling off.
BRMC's self-produced debut album consists, of 11 tracks of listening pleasures. The key to BRMC's compositions is not loud, soft, clear, and murky but rather mixing all the elements with an alchemist’s grace.
The opening track 'Love Burns' starts with a 40 second dreamy sample then bursts into a guitar laden rock song. Vocals chime 'Now she's gone love burns inside me.'
The second track 'Red Eyes and Tears' keeps the album going with a hammering, bass line which melds into dark distorted guitars and shrilling electric leads, and cool calm vocals which capsulate this song.
The upbeat jangly pop punk song, 'Whatever Happened to my Rock and Roll,' lets us know these boys can rock.
'Awake' my favorite track off the album is a dreamy ride down stream with gentle melodies awaken by the explosive electric change then it's bridge glides back down into the dream state this song is well composed and filled with subtle guitar bass nuances.
'White Palms' features some brilliant soloing of the bass and guitars as the vocals rant, 'Jesus I dare you to come back!' This track sounds like Jane’s Addiction was produced by 4AD Records.
'Rifles' with it’s hypnotic drums, seductive vocals and dark guitars is another highlight off the album.
BRMC impress with this incredible debut, looking forward to hearing their sophomore LP. If you have a chance to catch them play please do. I saw BRMC perform at Velvet Jones a small venue in Santa Barbara. The band sounded tight and put on an incredible live show complete with a Bauhauseque black and white light show.
