8 Blood On The Wall Liferz The Social Registry | 2007 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   Blood On The Wall is one of the few truly modern rock bands I can think of in that they sound both sleek and really filthy in the same god sent riff. Along with label mates The Psychic Ills, darling Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and recently departed contemporaries Dead Moon, BOTW are keeping the torch alive for dirty rock and fuzz influences such as Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. who themselves can’t seem to ebb too far from the rock consciousness. Their music is brassy and temperamental, smoke glazed in its production, and in the end, a force of absolutely unforgiving rock torpor. Other bands just can’t seem to match this. The New York trio is set to release their third effort on The Social Registry, Liferz, a collection of indelicate 70’s influences and thoroughly modern splintering. Like 2005’s Awesomer before, the album is eleven tracks of raucous fun and outright moodiness at the same time (the undoubted ‘wow’ here might be “Lightning Song”). The band understands the need for catchiness (“Rize”) and the raw, tenuous joy of their craft as well (“Hibernation”) and the ascension of their inner artist seems clear here. While previous BOTW records might have been challenging to the point of being arguably hard on the ears, there is a maturing balance at play on Liferz. Amid the mud and the smoke this band has a hold of something nebulous. While the climb from their bowery roots isn’t clear – for anyone – the shining acumen to make it is like a summer’s morning.
