Mellow and slinky, soft and sultry and every other metaphor you can think of to describe downtempo is what Boards of Canada’s new album The Campfire Headphase sounds like. Combining soft guitar riffs among a whole bunch of live instruments and some very eclectic beats covering the globe makes this a good album to chill to.

Comprised of Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin and based on the northern coast of Scotland, this duo has already put out two groundbreaking albums (Music Has the Right to Children and Geogaddi). Both of these are great albums and each have a sufficient amount of layers respectively as well as depth because of it. Headphase goes in the direction of being a little too mellow for its own good. It is a beautiful instrumental album. The only drawback is that none of the songs builds into anything. Rather, the album as a whole just seems to find a little momentum and stay there.

Waves’ soaking up beachfront sand is the foundation of “Satellite Anthem Icarus,” a rather hypnotic song that conjures visions of sun and fun, alone if not in complete bliss. Many of the songs create this vibe, which is fine but a little more variety would make this album superb. If you are interested in beautiful instrumental music that is easy on the brain yet has substance enough to keep you interested then you will love this album.
