Another fine and interesting release from our friends at Plug Research. Calamalka is the recording project of Vancouver based skateboarder/musician Michael Campitelli. "Shredders Dub" is a mostly instrumental cd incorporating that fine remix idiom called dub.Popularized by such artists as King Tubby and Lee 'Scratch' Perry-dub adds effects such as echo and delay to make a song sound quite trippy. Spread out over an entire cd-dub can sound a tad repetitive-but Calamalka varies the tracks enough to keep your interest.
The second track "Tabla Purists" sounds like the soundtrack to a horror movie set in space. Quite atmospheric and chilling. "Chassi" is a slow chunk of artsy funk.It has a strong repeating bass line and some nice clavinet fills. The most dub-like track is "Reliable I". This is also the only track with vocals. The infinite repeat guitar makes it sound very dubby. A nice track. "ShreddersDub" ends with a song called "Electric Blue".This one has a strange light jazz/rock feel. The drumming is crisp and light. A mellow way to end the cd.
"Shredders Dub" should appeal to fans of adventurous reggae or fine ambient instrumentals. Michael Campitelli plays some nice bass and drums on these tracks. The keyboard/sample effects fit the songs very well. Recommended for fans of Pole and other like minded outfits.
