Three piece band Celebration isn’t exactly here to rock your world. Instead, they prefer to creep up on you and hopefully get under your skin in a good way. Unfortunately, their self-titled album doesn’t translate into a cohesive piece that works on as many levels as they would obviously like it to. Their brand of psychedelic punk sometimes fails to mesh with their moodier melodic tunes.
What Celebration does do well though involves getting the most out of a groove whether it’s hard and charging or coolly chugging along. A highlight is the track “Diamonds”. The blues-flavored song has a slightly gentler feel than most of the album’s tracks. Also on the cool side is the intriguing tune “China”. It’s brief, but enigmatic and has a fullness of sound that makes it stand apart from some of the other too sparse tracks.
Celebration is mostly the brain child of Sean Antanaitis, who is responsible for just about every instrument except the drums, which are credited to David Bergander. While it’s easy to appreciate the multiple levels that he must be working on, perhaps Antanaitis is stretching himself a bit too thin. A majority of the songs including “Foxes”, “Lost Souls” and “Tonight” seem to fall by the wayside and suffer from a ho-hum sort of treatment.
The self-titled album does finish strongly though with the help of the track “Good Ship”. It’s the kind of song that was made for swaying. I’d even get out my lighter for this one if I had one and if they weren’t so frowned on by Smokey the Bear. A few more songs like this could give Celebration the cohesive boost that their album seems to be missing.
Celebration is a band obviously overloaded with ideas and musical elements. Let’s hope they’re a little more focused the next time around.
