Equal parts throwback to disco as to jazz and funk, Brooklyn based Chin Chin could easily have been as big in the 70s as Earth, Wind & Fire. But the funny thing is that they are not old at all. Influenced by many of the jazz and funk greats of the past, Chin Chin fuse all of that together on top of electronic keyboards to sound somewhere between the past and the present. It sounds like it could be jam music but you won’t find a 20 minute riff-a-thon here as the songs run under seven minutes.
With a party vibe and dance-grooves, Chin Chin are not like most other bands coming out of Brooklyn right now who seem to be blending African music into their styles, and falling under the Afrobeat banner. With guitar solos in songs like opening track, “Miami” the band shy away from what seems to be hip right now and moving towards their own brand of modern disco.
Unfortunately, the album gets a little stale after awhile, as the bands riffs seem limited to genre’s that lost steam in the 70s, making Chin Chin sound more like a tribute at times to the past than a band taking old elements and making them their own. The album is fun, but I do think Chin Chin just need to get more creative in finding their voice.
