What does it mean to make original music in 2006? Hasn’t everything been done before? Sure, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of musicians out there who are combining different influences in new and different ways. But is anyone truly “original” anymore?
Clogs would very much like us to believe that they are original. Their album, Lantern, is a sort of “minimalist folk” experiment; an exercise in acoustic sound performed with an indie sensibility. The copy on the promotional CD practically chokes on its own exuberance: “their fourth album is their finest and most varied to date,” it states, “as the group augments their unique sonic palette (acoustic guitar, strings, percussion, bassoon) with melodica, ukulele, and mandola—and [lead guitarist Bryce] Dessner goes electric!” Perhaps that “sonic palette” is unique to anyone who hasn’t heard a Jon Brion song, and perhaps Bryce Dessner going electric is a sure sign that indie hell has frozen over. But I don’t think so.
