Damien Rice's voice, the undeniable star of O is wan and tender, wrapped in flannel comfortably like an autumn loving body on the first really cool day under Libra. He might not have the thunder and lightning bust of an auditorium, but a small room of intimates sipping coffee might raptly close their eyes and revel in him long enough to let their drinks go cold. The counterparts in his backing band - especially Vyvienne Long on cello - are the sweet accent to his sea salted folk singer sound. On a song like "Volcano" the depth of Rice's forte is evident, from the peaks and valleys of lyrical sensitivity to somber, heartfelt sway. It is a simple little song - like many of the others on O with a complex story about human relations.
Throughout O Damien Rice dances with the signature that delivered him; he doesn't stretch too far, extending himself out of context. There are none of the misguided experiments that might plague someone else's album. Even the sixteen minute long "Eskimo" and its sonic orchestral break in midstream is a fitting, dramatic treat. Rice holds his folksy reins with a comfortable clutch, like Neil Young on his legendary efforts Harvest and Harvest Moon. There is an even, yet dynamic quality to O that compliments its sense of maturity. Practically, a must have.
