He started out with The Clean in 1979 and since then, he has bounced back and forth between them, a solo career and quite a few other rock outfits throughout the years. These days, the singer/songwriter seems to be in a one man mood with the release of Frozen Orange in 2004 and now his latest The Far Now. Going his own way must be a good thing for Kilgour though because his current disc is a beauty full of nice songs and melodies that keep you humming right along. This album is basically the man and his guitar. There are plenty of other instruments and players on hand (Kilgour even took a turn playing around with keyboards and percussion) but it’s the duo act of Kilgour and his axe that carries the album and its songs. “BBC World” is one of those tunes that keeps your toe tapping even if the lyrics aren’t as happy-go-lucky as the pretty music would leave you to believe. It’s like a coda to a Donovan song or one of the other softer psychedelics. “Yenisei” acts as one big bucolic ode to summer days made for some lazy meandering. Kilgour works hard to make sure the songs on his album don’t sound alike and he largely succeeds but there might still be a little too much similarity in the mix since a few of the songs fall into wishy-washy territory. “Donna & Jeff” never really gets off the ground and “Sun of God” has a nice otherworldly feel, but by the end there really isn’t much behind the glossy veneer. Overall, David Kilgour’s latest isn’t exactly a stretch in anyway, but it will probably more than please the fans who have stuck with this musician through all the twists and turns in his long career.
