Rarely is anything as bad as it seems.
Devo 2.0 is the perfect example of this. Take one part seminal punk/art house band and mix it with kids who didn’t make the cut to be on their own show on the Disney Channel and there it is: how could it be good?
This album comes from the phenomenon of “kidz bop” and other mail order/Wal-mart staples that have kids singing the “hits” of today. But they have taken it a step further by having these kids record an album of Devo songs. The original members of Devo played the music on the album and their cute kids do the vocals.
The music and lyrics are so strong; it doesn’t seem so bad when you listen to it. But all the attitude and angst seems so phony, see Ashley Simpson but much more manufactured. I have this image of stage parents being somewhere yelling at their kids telling them to be more subversive.
Some highlights include “Cyclops” which has a weird Lunachicks vibe and is one of two new songs that DEVO wrote and recorded for this album, and the gender re-arranged “Boy you want” which was such a good song there isn’t much you could do that could possibly ruin it.
One could argue that at least kids could be exposed to good music, but why is the music industry dumbing everything down for kids. I don’t know how comfortable I feel about a ‘tween singing about having an “Uncontrollable Urge”. This album makes me feel dirty.
