6 DJ Cam Revisited By Recall | 2006 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   "Revisited By" is a remix album of tracks composed by Laurent Daumail a.k.a. DJ Cam. This Parisian has been recording since 1994. His style is minimalist and down tempo – often compared to DJ Krush and DJ Shadow. The drumming is definitely your basic kit with lots of space for obscure samples and vocals added into the mix. The songs on this cd show a strong jazz and hip hop influence. "Revisited By" is a nice cd to play late in the evening after a night out clubbing and you need to mellow out. This is the first time that I have heard DJ Cam – so hearing remixes of his music is a strange way to start. – but I'm always game for a challenge. Let's compare remixes of the same song. Of the three remixes of "Success" – Thievery Corporation wins the battle. Their mellow but funky dance instrumental prevails. The Africa Blues remix is also quite good. The Kenny Dope version relies too much on the same line repeating over and over again . The two versions of "Meera" are both very good in different ways. The Extra Lucid remix blends old school drumbeats with Arabic wails. The Four Hero version relies on funky minimalism and jazzy keyboards. Both versions are excellent. Some things didn't appeal as much to my ears. "He's Gone" has great vocals by China – but the lyrics are very clichéd. "Voodoo Child" has some okay raps. The middle and end of the cd are versions of "Innervisions". The DJ Vadim remix has a great turntable-ism about it. Kind of druggy/experimental/funky---very good. The cd ends with Flytronix's take on the same song. This nine minute opus starts with a very new age feeling – getting jazzy/funky with drums and ending with a great bass line. This version has bird sounds/harp/sax/xylophone – a fine ending. I could recommend "Revisited By' to an adventurous dance music listener. The multitude of styles used by the various remixers might be difficult for some people. Late night enjoyment for those into down tempo remixes. J.
