Japan’s own DJ Jumbo drops a fine debut release, kickin’ old school jams with seamless scratch cuts and tight turntable skills that should please anyone searching for a high-energy, danceable jam. Making liberal use of James Brown beats, howls and refrains as a kind of bedrock to other Godfather contemporaries such as Wilson Pickett and Bobby Byrd, new school ears will immediately recognize Handsome Boy Modeling School, Jurassic 5, DJ Logic and Del the Funkee Homosapien among the slew of current hip hop players featured throughout the album.
Spanning nearly 40 tracks of relentless rhythms and rhymes, DJ Jumbo sneaks in a cut of MC Pee Pants from TV’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force wanting candy while The Litmus Test rocks through their own "Cut Chemist". "Getting Large" by Black Rock & Ron is further embellished with some freestylin’ human beat box. Legion of Doom’s "Puttin My Thangs Down" gets some more James Brown organ grinds and a touch of King Floyd’s seminal "Groove Me" intro while Tuff Crew’s "Kick the Ball" has some of the best lyrical delivery on the whole joint.
DJ Jumbo has mad knowledge of classic soul sounds that easily mesh with what house party favorites will get the dance floor poppin’. With this in mind, it’s startling to hear the final few tracks of cheesy disco grooves as a summation to what began as more of a hard-driving hip hop session. Maybe that’s how they wrap it up in the Land of the Rising Sun? No matter, this is still an underground gem worth checking out.
