Some bands have the ability to take music to higher levels; El Gato takes their best shot at it with their first full length recording ‘We’re Birds’ which is an independent release . El Gato, from Denton, Texas brings together a mixture of guitar-lead layered songs that take the listener to a deep immersed level that by the end of the record leaves you feeling weighed down. The band consists of John Vineyard who sings lead vocals and guitar, John “Eugene” Burgmeier guitar and keys, Kevin Dotolo drums and percussion, and Evan Hisey bass and organ. These four bring together a mixture of chorusy multi-layered guitars with tripped out vocals and the ever constant pianos and keyboards that give the songs character as well as shape.

El Gato’s strongest attribute is their musical talents yet they seem to have a lapse in memory about the listener’s perspective. The song’s take to long to build and it leaves you sitting their in anticipation for the verse instead of being into the song right at the start. In some cases it is alright but with the over abundance of the music, the effect of the songs never can mature within the listeners mind. There are some songs though that do catch the ear quite nicely such as “The Christmas Single” which is a great slow song that is filled with harmonies and amazing musical aspects from guitar to the pianos it all seems to fit. Another standout track is “Lost In America (Part One)” this is a great up beat faster track that catches you form the start unlike a fair share of the songs on the album. This songs guitars and almost pop-punk sound to it bring the soft and melodic side of El Gato to a stand still and brings out El Gato’s need to rock.

Here is the deal, this album is a really good collective effort on all the band members parts. What makes this album uninteresting to me could interest you, just because I tend to listen to faster and upbeat music. I am open to this saturation of instruments and the lack of catchy hooks to drawn the listener in. I don’t believe that anytime soon we will see these boys on a main stage playing 30,000 people. They do show potential if they learn to stop trying to be so different they might just stumble over their own genius.
