One thing I know for sure "the Power Out" will be on my best of list for 2004. Electrelane are four young women from Brighton England that play very idiosyncratic and original music. Some of the lyrics are in French,Spanish and German. The music mixes rock, blues and electronics without being any one thing for very long. Produced by the master of indie-Steve Albini(Big Black/Shellac bands-Nirvana etc etc as producer)-"The Power Out" is one mighty fine cd.
"Gone Under Sea" sounds like a female Joy Division with french lyrics.Sounds kind of strange-but the song is great."This Deed" takes it's lyrics from "The Gay Science" by Nietzsche. All of the lyrics are in German.Sounds kind of art-school pretentious-but again they pull it off.Nietzsche rocks!I never thought i would say that."Love Builds Up" is a great instrumental that starts with sythesizer-adds organ-then guitar and drums along the way.Nice building of momentum by the end of the song. The only mis-step on the cd is "The Valley".I found the twelve person chorus a little creepy.Just my personal taste.
All in all-I found "The Power Out" to be an inventive and original piece of music. The band seems to play very well together. The drumming is exceptional. Electrelane should be very proud of this cd.
