This may be her sixth release since 1999, and while there have always been flashes of brilliance on her other discs, Miracle of Five has the singer/songwriter reaching a new level of maturity and comfort. Mandell has always had the low tones of a true chanteuse. It’s the kind of voice that can easily get lost or drowned out in the mix so this time; the indie heroine tried something new. She recorded her vocals and guitar first and then her band overdubbed their instruments. The result is almost radical. Eleni Mandell’s voice and her raw story songs are now front and center where they belong. The overall tone of the album is reflective and personal, a theme perfectly captured by the opening song “Moonglow, Lamp Low”. “All I need is a rainbow / And true love just like sugar in my coffee” muses Mandell. Though she does sing of “beautiful butterflies” on “Wings in His Eyes” and other lovey dovey things, there’s a quality to this particular artist that separates her from the usual mopey love lorn female singer/songwriter pack. She’s emotional but never apologizes for it or hides behind it. In fact, she finds a sort of power in hanging all of her laundry (dirty or otherwise) out to dry. It’s not completely surprising when you consider that Mandell has been mentored by the likes of Tom Waits and Chuck E. Weiss (yes - the one from the Ricki Lee Jones song). Yes, she can be blue like Joni Mitchell, but as the songs on Miracle of Five show, she’s more likely to kick her down in the dumps mood in the ass rather than surrender to it.
