'Unrest' might best be described as mellow electronica. No song is
above mid-tempo on any of the tracks. This Norwegian singer-songwriter
is also a member of the folky Kings Of Convenience. I have never heard
that group, but this not folky at all. The gimmick behind this cd is that
Mr. Oye traveled from continent to continent to work with 10 electronic
producers in 10 cities to create the 10 tracks on 'Unrest'. The results
are very consistent and highly listenable.
'The Athlete' is a very clean sounding song. The percussion has that
programmed 80's sound. Erlends vocal approach is closer to talking than
traditional singing. 'The Talk' starts with a nice drum pattern leading into
an excellent piano lick. The production by Bjorn Torske is a little more
edgy than some of the other tracks- and I liked that. My favorite cut is
'Ghost Trains'. It reminds me of early John Foxx music. The sound is
clean and sparse. The vocals have a distant quality. The production by
Morgan Geist of New York is excellent.
'Unrest' is one those cds that I kept returning to over and over again.
The only fault that I can find is that the keyboards are too clean. I am not
a fan of the Fender Rhodes piano sound that gets used all over 'Unrest'.
A dirtier keyboard would be more to my liking. Otherwise, 'Unrest' is an
excellent mellow electronica cd with intelligent lyrics.
As an added bonus-there is an extra track added at the end of the last
track. You have to wait through 6 minutes of silence-but it's a good track.
Enjoy.
