In a move that might just swipe the “we do American music better than the Americans” award from their red, white and blue-loving cousins, the Swedes, the Denmark five-piece Figurines have released an old-fashioned American pop album with just enough dark twists to make it a modern must-have. When the Deer Wore Blue is the third full-length from the group and their strongest disc yet. Borrowing a riff or two and some ohs and ahs from everyone from the Beach Boys to the surf punk and garage rock movement, the Danish quintet have concocted one hell of a spell with their mixture of musical genres.

You know you’re in for something special right off the bat when the album’s opener “Childhood Verse” includes vocalist/guitarist Christian Hjelm’s ecstatic rock vocal-perfect refrains of “I love it! “I love it!” There’s a familiar sound to the refrain though and just when you’re starting to conjure up images of Whoopi Goldberg in a nun’s habit leading her fellow sisters through their rendition of the pop classic “I Will Follow Him”, where they howl “I love him! I love him!”, Figurines make the refrain their own by capping their chorus with “I lied” which turns things just slightly askew and creates a new dark layer to their pop sound. “The Air We Breathe” is a glorious ode to the Beach Boys, but not the simple melodies of “Fun Fun Fun”. We’re talking the more complex “Surf’s Up”.

The Figurines definitely have a love for shiny American pop - the guitars may play at punk speed on their song “Bee Dee” but the chugging sounds of “Johnny Be Good” are right below the surface. Still though, the group is at their best on the track “Angels of the Bayou”. On this tune, the band takes all of their shared musical knowledge and ramps it up to create this original gem of a song. The song opens with dark surf punk chords and soars on until it practically drowns in layer upon layer of atmospheric lyrics where “days feel like tail lights” and “you feel in the air that you never belonged”.
