Faced with a buzz to Kill a Mockingbird and a CD package wrapped in a plethora of praising quotes, ranging from 'Fischerspooner are the best thing to happen to music since electricity (NME),' and 'One of the key albums of a new Millennium (Ministry).' I removed the pretentious wrappers and placed the eleven-track disc entitled '#1' in the car stereo. Headed south, on a late Saturday evening journey to Los Angeles, I immediately felt a connection to the eighties synth pop music.
Fischerspooner of New York City, consist of the dynamic duo Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner, not to be confused with Simon & Garfunkle, but possibly a modern day fusion of Martin Gore, and Neil Francis Tennant, with Duran Duran’s make-up artist?
Opening track 'Sweetness' starts it's ignition with a sample of a 747 in take off, and launches into a sequenced electronica roller coaster landing into a hypnotizing cover of Wire's 'The 15th.'
The dance club single 'Emerge' is dancy, catchy and orchestrated with percision hand clapping, good breaks and twists. Lizzy Yoder lent her voice on backing vocals helping to get the message across of 'You don't need to emerge from nothing, You don't need to tear away.'
The unbashful Fischerspooner achieves a good album, bringing back the eighties, with well-crafted alt/pop tunes. Far from being the best thing to happen to music since electricity. The CD comes with a bonus disc complete with videos, documentary, a novel, cooking recipes, and fitness video. My advice, less is more!
