Okay, almost nine years and four full lengths later, the Foo Fighters have made an album which represents the current and final members of the band. Having gone through a few guitar players and a couple of drummers, Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett are as Taylor states”…the one that lasts until the band breaks up.” One by One is the latest release from the Foo’s and is being lauded as a departure from the previous Foo Fighters sound.
One by One is a rocking CD complete with eleven blazing tracks recorded over a two-week period in Grohl’s home studio back in Virginia. The band had a previous session out west but scrapped the material in favour of a looser, natural un-perfect session helmed by longtime Grohl pal, Nick Raskuliecz.
Songs like “All My Life” and the tender “Times Like These” which is reminiscent of The Cult and the Sonic Temple era are all over your local radio as this gets penned but the standout tracks on this CD are “Low”, “Halo” and “Overdrive”, three completely different tunes which display the bands current diversity. The guitars are super thick throughout the CD, overdriven, fuzzy and sonic but to me the drums-what is being played is great-sounds thin, almost under produced like a demo. Since Grohl was one of the best around in his past life, it seemed the drumming sound could be a little thicker but it’s a micro gripe compared to the overall feel of this release which even Queen’s Brian May lends his guitar to the haunting ballad “Tired”.
If you like the rock, this by all means is a great add to any collection and is money well spent. If you are lucky enough to get the CD with enhanced features, pop it in the iMac and check out the guys in action. Any Grammy winner that uses rocks greatest reward as a doorstop is good in my book.
