The impact of the finest Californian “bud” can be most heard in the next release of “Future Pigeon’s” self titled album “Future Pigeon” The particular strain most eminent in Echo Park is something the band should’ve considered before sitting down with old Tascam reel to reel 8 track machine to mix through walls of space echoes and effects. The result is a mind altering dub experience about as exciting as shooting pigeons with an air gun on a Thursday afternoon. You feel the potential of a 12 gauge shot gun but you realize that if anyone knew how stoned you were they’d never give you a loaded weapon.
Coveted as the LA weekly “band of the year, instrumentally, the band relies heavily on the bass player seldom finding the pocket with the vocals.
“Gift tax” the opening track on the album is reminiscent of massive attack’ cover of “light my fire” which as a stand alone instrumental piece finds a good groove to spacey samples but is brought down to earth by the vocals which do not seem to fit the mixture of what they are trying to create.
The butt shaking “Evil” could quite easily have been “Kinky” the mexi funk rockers from Mexico City. The horn lines suggesting a mariachi band playing reggae dub. In a market like LA this is a highly desirable sound--this not detracting from the fine art if being able to make people shake their bodies in a smoky blur.
“Rolling” is where the band find their core sound – beginning with old school muted guitar the song has an upbeat feel to it that can keep you bouncing on the “higher grade smoking” all day long. Lyrically this seems to work a lot better— having a Ranking Joe waxing lyrical over the off beat horn stabs stylistically finds the pocket of Jah Rasta love.
Future Pigeon have made a good effort in making this record – though they are not yet at a point which will see them climb to new heights--literally and figuratively, they definitely do have potential. There seems to be no true distinction in the tracks they have put together for this record. Perhaps time will allow them to stylistically develop a sound that is theirs.
