Aye me, Grandaddy, thee hath done it yet again. Grandaddy has always been able to prove that good quality music needn’t be created with sorrowful, intensely dramatic lyrics, and grandiose musical arrangements. Sometimes, a synthesizer strongly resembling the music of the original Nintendo gaming system and a “who gives a fuck?” attitude is all you need to make a quality record.
With Grandaddy’s latest release, “Excerpts From the Diary of Todd Zilla” (har har har), they continue their unquestionable status among the best of Lo-Fi Indie Rock. They start off the album with simple but meaningful lyrics: “Pull the curtains on the day / sometimes it is the only way / pull the curtains on the night / sometimes it isn’t worth the fight.” Okay, so maybe the AABB rhyming scheme can get annoying at times, but then again, anything can if heard too much.
As the album progresses, it actually gets more somber, with surprisingly more lengthy songs, like “A Valley Son (Sparing)”, and the ending song, appropriately named “Goodbye?”.
This EP from Grandaddy shows that although they enjoy having a swell time, they have feelings too. Just like you and me. Keep up the good work Grandaddy, and everyone be sure to keep updated on when the DVD is coming out. |
