From Cincinnati, Ohio comes The Greenhornes third album, “Sewed Soles.” The Greenhornes mostly emanate the music coming out of Los Angeles in the mid to late sixties. “Sewed Soles” for the most part sounds like Surf music with an edge, mixed with Southern Blues. The guitars are ragged and the organs sound like church music. The drums keep a basic blues count and provide a bit of the backbeat that was just catching on in the early sixties. The singing matches well to the music, as does the use of sporadic harmonicas, giving “Sewed Soles” a great blues feel.
On “I’ve Been Down,” the singing is dead-on for Jorma Kaukonen circa Jefferson Airplane. (If you don’t know Jorma, you don’t know Jack).
The Greenhornes are an up and coming band starting to make their mark. “Sewed Soles” was produced by Jack White and right now who is bigger than Jack White? The band also just finished a tour with The White Stripes and had songs appear on a little show called The Sopranos, as well as an upcoming John Peel documentary. Keep a lookout for them, because if this album is any indication they have a nice future ahead.
