If Hole anthems like “Miss World” had been sung in tune and with a French accent? If the blips and bloops of Stereolab’s “Miss Modular” had been grunged out? You’ll have to keep wondering about the French-accented Hole songs, but His Name is Alive’s Detrola will give you nightmares about a Love-fronted retro band. The songs, with titles like “After I Leave U” and “*C*A*T*S*,” are promising enough, but they don’t really go anywhere. The best tune, “Seven Minutes,” does what it does quite well, popping along with a 1960s-backbeat and a nice little acoustic guitar figure. It’s not as if there’s nothing here to recommend the album, but there’s really nothing here to keep it spinning in my CD player. His Name is Alive sounds best when they stay away from the electronics and concentrate on acoustic ballads. Unfortunately, too much of this album sounds like an American band trying to capitalize on the sounds and successes of their European counterparts. Too little, His Name..., and too late.
