8 Horse Red Haired Girl Kosmic Music | 2007 | Album Biography Comments (1) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   She has released seven albums and eight singles throughout Europe and has had the distinction of working with everyone from Burt Bacharach to the Pet Shop Boys but Scottish singer/songwriter Horse McDonald (who records under the name of Horse) is still an unknown in the American marketplace. That’s about to change with the release of her new album Red Haired Girl which marks her U.S. debut. The disc is full of raw passionate songs that tear through the complexities of love lost and found. As a singer, Horse sounds like Melissa Etheridge’s slight older, more nuanced sister. She has the throaty rock growl down pat but she also adds in touches of jazz and the blues which gives her a wider field of sounds to pull from and experiment with. Those variations are put to good use on the album’s opener “This Time”, a fierce red-hot rocker with jazzy sounds that swoop in and out. “Make Love to Me” steams it up with a horns blasting away and an exotic beat that keeps things simmering. As an artist, Horse is more interested in the art of singing than in lyric writing and it shows on a few of her songs that tend to get repetitive at times. “She’s Burning” is a vibrant torch song in the style of Patti Smith’s “Because the Night” but the song loses steam halfway through after the umpteenth repetition of the lyric “She’s Burning”. The album ends strongly though with a raw rocker called “Can’t Break My Heart”. The song has a late 80s feel to it, not in a cheesy way, but in the way that women like Ann Wilson of Heart and Bonnie Tyler were ruling the airwaves with their big soulful voices. The disc’s closer, title track “Red Haired Girl” soars and sparkles thanks to a strong string arrangement with soaring dum dum dums that might remind you of the Beatles “Eleanor Rigby”. Horse is an original artist that U.S. audiences are long overdue in hearing but once heard, the album should definitely whet their appetite for more.
