On their third album, Made in the Dark, Hot Chip offer up a more danceable album than their sophomore effort, The Warning. While I would consider their first album, Coming on Strong, their best and most-groundbreaking, this new album is their next best. The songs here continue with high energy, wit, charm, and the creativity that their first album so tirelessly brought. But with a harder-edged sound on their third album, Hot Chip leave you wanting more.
This London-based five piece are known for their vocal arrangements as much as their quirky dance music, and on Made in the Dark, the band takes their talent for creating off-beat dance music to a more accessible place. The beats here are harder, making the songs sound like they’re ready for the dance club while also maintaining their voice. The song “Shake A Fist” is genius, with keyboard beats that will remind you of early Depeche Mode, while “Ready For the Floor” is probably not only one of the best songs on the album, but one of their best songs in their catalogue so far. It’s hard not to like this album and Hot Chip due to them taking hip hop to nerd kingdom! The album is a fun mix of dance floor beats, gently sung vocals, and witty lyrics that will give you good reason to do the robot, then spazz out in any club. You won’t be alone, believe me!
