I Am Spoonbender’s “Shown Actual Size” is a fun little album. Within the 3 song disc they manage create its own unique genre of pop music by stealing too heavily from every other form of modern music to fit into just one category. Lots of synths, lots of strange retro sounds lots of strange futuristic sounds…It comes out sounding like it would be perfect for a Volkswagen commercial directed by George Orwell: Catchy and hypnotic, but with a sense of foreboding and satire. The songs, like almost everything produced these days are full of electronic noises and drums. Yet they have more in common with Devo and your average video game soundtrack than with anything pounding through the nights of San Francisco in the early 90’s. In fact their use of electronics stages it’s own mini rebellion against the normal DJ Spinmaster 5000 (music that only starts to sound good after your second hit of ecstasy) when the linear notes proclaim “all music performed by humans: no sequencers, samples or ulterior motives”. Listen to the second track “Remover – Installer” and you’ll realize how much extra work they go through to say that. The opening track “I Went and Had My Knives Sharpened” reminds me of the time I saw Wycleff rap in Japanese, it’s impressive despite the fact that you’ve no idea what’s going. I like it more in a sense of being different and experimental than something that moves me. It’s as though music born in the 80’s has finally come to fruition. It’s not really going to get any better than this. We’ve kept these monkeys locked in a room and jumping on typewriters for a hundred years and finally they’ve written Stephen King.
